The Yamaha Forest project has entered the second phase of its five-year programme to plant 200,000 new trees by 2010.
Some 1,600 people, including pupils from local schools, gathered to plant 13,500 new trees in the 120ha Yamaha Forest in the Sukabumi province of Indonesia, which is already home to 5,000 mahogany, teak and other species of tree that were planted when the project kicked off in December 2005.
The Yamaha Forest project is jointly run by Yamaha Corp and Yamaha Motor Co Ltd and is part of Yamaha’s corporate social responsibility activities.
The project follows in the footsteps of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Billion Tree campaign, which aims to have one billion new trees planted by the end of 2007 to help tackle climate change.
