The WWF is calling for the government to abolish stamp duty on sustainable homes in the forthcoming budget.

The environmental group is urging chancellor Gordon Brown to fuel demand for sustainable homes by making them “financially irresistible”.

Under the WWF’s plans, homes meeting the EcoHomes “very good” standard would win exemption from stamp duty and capital allowances would be available to those wanting to make their homes sustainable.

Paul King, director of WWF’s One Million Sustainable Homes Campaign, said: “By introducing a differential stamp duty for homes that meet a credible environmental standard, the demand for sustainable housing would soar.”
