A survey carried out by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has revealed that furniture manufacturers would consider recycling their wood waste if financial incentives and more information were available.
The survey showed that nearly 20% of furniture manufacturers currently recycle wood waste while one-third dispose to landfill. However, of those who do not recycle, 62% said they had considered it as an option.
Motivators to recycling include getting paid for waste; more information on recycling; the proximity of a recycler; help with segregation and storage.
Previous WRAP research has shown that furntiure manufacturers could save significant amounts of money through recycling. Some businesses pay around £260 for the disposal to landfill of a 35 yd3 skip of wood waste, while others gain up to £400 by selling the same load for recycling.
