The Wood Panel Industries Federation (WPIF) has welcomed a government commitment to ban landfill of wood.

The organisation released a statement after environment minister Hilary Benn questioned why wood and other materials were still being sent to landfill when there were other uses available. “Banning landfill of those products is going to be the next stage,” he said.

The WPIF has been urging the government to take further steps to encourage better use of waste that is recyclable, highlighting how waste wood can be used for wood panel production, animal bedding and energy generation.

“Sending waste wood to landfill is out of step with the times and we welcome Hilary Benn’s commitment to amend this wasteful practice,” said WPIF’s director-general Alastair Kerr.

“The WPIF looks forward to engaging in the public consultation due to be published on this issue.”

The panels industry is the UK’s biggest recycler of post-consumer waste wood, consuming over one million tonnes annually.
