Moroe than double the expected number, 123, attended the day, which included wood processing and wood working and identifying different tree species.

The day, which was designed to act as a “taster” for 13-16 year olds thinking of undertaking rural skills courses as part of their education, was organised by Lantra, the skills council for the environmental and land-based sector. It said it wanted to ensure youngsters considering a career in the sector are given the right training and are able to take up job opportunities.

“One way of doing this is raising the awareness in schools of the sheer scale of the land-based sector in areas such as forestry,” said Liz Paul, Lantra’s regional partnership manager for the Highlands and Islands.

“This event is just one part of the overall project and has acted as a taster for everyone involved to give them some first hand experience.”
