The Woodland Trust is planting 33 new woods around the UK to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Each wood will be named after ships in Lord Nelson’s fleet in an exercise also designed to celebrate the important role played by British timber in the country’s naval heritage.

Schoolchildren will take part in the project, which includes planting of trees at the new Britannia, Dartmouth and Conqueror woods in Devon and Cornwall during November.

An estimated 50,000 oaks were cut down to build Nelson’s warships.
