The Scottish Executive has unveiled its vision of seeing more joined-up woodland in Scotland.

At a seminar held in New Lanark this month, the Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage explained to foresters how the executive plans to create its “forest habitat networks”.

The event marked the publication of the booklet “Habitat Networks for Wildlife and People – the Creation of Sustainable Forest Habitats” and the opening for business of the new Scottish Forestry Grants Scheme.

Deputy minister for the environment Allan Wilson said: “Although Scotland’s woodland area has been expanded from a low point of 5% of our land area in 1920 to 17% today, it is still one of the least wooded countries in Europe, and it is the executive’s policy to continue expanding the wooded area.”
