A £650,000 community wood-fuelled heating system, believed to be the first of its kind in England, has been switched on in Northumberland.

The system in Kielder uses woodchips produced from spruce trees in Kielder Forest and will heat and provide hot water for a visitor centre, business workshops, the village school, youth hostel and six new homes.

The initiative involves Tynedale Council, One NorthEast, the Forestry Commission and the local community.
