McGrath Brothers (Waste Control) Ltd and Urban Forest Ltd are to receive £325,000 and £345,000 respectively to establish the facilities and help WRAP promote the reprocessing of wood waste.
A total of £1m is to be invested into the McGrath Brothers facility in Barking, Essex and it is expected to process 21,000 tonnes of wood waste per year.
“As a result of this project, we will be able to recycle large amounts of waste wood that mainly comes to us from the construction industry,” said David McGrath, managing director at McGrath Brothers.
“We are developing new markets for the recycled products and will be focusing on high value added products such as surfacing and equine bedding.”
WRAP has also annnounced that paper mill ash is to be reclassified as a raw material as part of a scheme to make it easier to re-use.
The Waste Protocols Project (WPP), a joint venture between the Environment Agency and WRAP, aims to reduce the administrative burden of turning industrial and commercial waste into useful products.
This will include reclassifying gypsum from the manufacture of plasterboard and paper mill ash from the burning of sludge created during paper making, which WPP says can be used as an aggregate in other industries.
