Waste wood from the construction of the Olympic Games is to be used to create log walls to generate new habitats for wildlife in east London.

The Olympic Delivery Authority said that it is reclaiming 90% of demolition material for recycling or reuse, above targets set in its Sustainable Development Strategy, which “is unprecedented for a project of this size and scale”.

The log walls will form part of a 10,000m2 wildlife corridor surrounding the Olympic Park that will become home to a range of species found in the area, including frogs, spiders and endangered ground bugs.

Waste wood will also be chipped and put in soil used to create the correct ground levels for construction to take place across the site.
