Aalto Wood Recycling, modelled on the successful Brighton Wood Recycling Project, is collecting timber, wood packaging and scrap pallets from from builders, demolition companies and others across west and south Yorkshire.

The Kinsley-based service uses wood to make products such as garden planters and benches, which are sold at its site. Material is also sacked up as firewood or sent for reprocessing into chipboard.

Aalto, named after a Finnish furniture designer, already has plans to open a second retailing outlet.

“Because we charge less than other forms of waste disposal, our customers have the financial as well as the environmental incentive to recycle,” said Aalto.

Aalto, which also provides training for people recovering from long-term mental health problems, is supported by a number of organisations including Coalfields Regeneration Trust, WYSELink, Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and Yorkshire Forward.
