Claims by a plastics pallet manufacturer that its products are more cost-effective than timber are being challenged by the National Association of Pallet Distributors (NAPD).

It quotes two recent studies demonstrating the superiority of wood. In Germany it has been discovered that timber pallets are often more hygienic than plastic, while a French study into the life cycle of the Europallet concludes it is excellent for long-term use, is easily repaired, comes from renewable sources and produces fewer emissions.

NAPD spokesperson Greg Milton said: ‘There need be no wastage with a wood pallet, it is entirely environmentally friendly. In addition, our association’s quality scheme enables us to better guarantee a uniform strength in repaired pallets and this, together with the incoming British Standard on repair, will give our customers further reassurance.’
