Chest of Drawers, an independent retailer in Islington, says the new rating system will bring “a high level of transparency to furniture”.

The system rates furniture according to the wood source, workshop practices and furniture miles. Working with NGOs and industry bodies, the company aims to make the rating system an industry standard.

“There are some good initiatives in the pipeline from specialist NGOs such as the FSC and WWF, but we feel it is incumbent on retailers like ourselves to take up the gauntlet and move towards sustainability today,” said Kim Corbett, director at Chest of Drawers.

To complement the rating system, the company has launched two new furniture ranges, designed in-house, and made of reclaimed walnut and elm.
