Europe’s first forestry wood chain conference was held in Edinburgh by the Forest Research and Building Research Establishment to explore issues from plant cells to sawn timber.

The event last week was aimed at promoting an integrated approach to production of quality timber and featured internationally renowned scientists.

Opening the conference, Forestry Commission director-general Tim Rollinson said: “Industries across the wood chain need to take an holistic approach and communicate more effectively if wood is to compete with other materials.”

The conference was timed to coincide with the completion of three major EU-funded projects on compression wood, the impact of climate change and improving timber drying.
