It was a case of lights, camera and action when a stunning display of the shortlist of The Wood Awards was revealed at the architectural show 100% Detail at Earls Court on Thursday.

Twenty-four projects out of 128 entries were unveiled by Andrew Barnett, a director of 2004 Gold Award winning architectural practice Hopkins Architects which took top prize for its Norwich Cathedral Visitors’ Centre.

Michael Buckley of Turnstone Communications, organisers of The Wood Awards, said the camera crew was making a 15-minute film about the awards which will include the shortlist launch, the prize winning ceremony at Carpenters’ Hall in the City of London on October 19 and some of the judging. It is hoped the programme will be broadcast on a TV channel in November, but Mr Buckley said it would also be available to show to potential sponsors of the awards for the future as well as being used by the industry at conferences and seminars. He said: “It will have a wonderful flexibility.”

Paul Stevenson of The Wood Awards said the awards had gone from strength to strength and Mr Barnett said that what made the awards special was the variety of the projects. He added: “We are constantly inspired by timber.”

Entries for this year’s awards range from church repairs to major public buildings, and small private houses to university libraries, using every form of wood from solid hardwoods and softwoods to mouldings, plywood and MDF.
