The focus will be on skills and craftsmanship at this year’s The Wood Awards – formerly the Carpenters’ Awards.

The organisers say entries are already beginning to filter through but they are calling on more to consider putting projects forward.

Mark O’Brien, chairman of the Wood Awards steering group, said: “The Wood Awards are an invaluable platform upon which the UK timber trade can promote itself by focusing on the end uses of timber and timber products.

“I would encourage all companies to become involved and to use the awards as a promotional vehicle for the trade and their clients.”

This year’s categories have been restructured into four major awards – commercial, private, structural and conservation/restoration – plus an overall Gold Award winner and a discretionary award for innovation.

Key criteria for entries will be suitability of design in relation to location and purpose, the choice of wood, craftsmanship, installation and finish.

Entries can be made by any joinery or installation company, architects, designers or builders and contractors. Project owners, public or private, are also encouraged to enter.

One of the organisers, Michael Buckley, said: “Entering, being short-listed, or winning means that many of those companies and individuals associated with such projects, including timber agents, importers and merchants, can be recognised for their involvement.”

This year, 20 short-listed projects will be displayed on www.woodawards.com from June to October. The awards ceremony will be held at Carpenters Hall, London on October 15.
