A number of Build Center branches are thought to have closed today, TTJ understands, but parent company Wolseley UK refused to confirm or deny that closures had taken place.

TTJ was told that as many as 50 branches may be being shut, with staff apparantly told to go home.

When asked directly whether closures had taken place, a Wolseley UK spokesperson said the group “cannot confirm details of branch closures until all Build Center employees have been informed of whether they are impacted”.

“There is no regional or divisional breakdown of job losses available. It is early days and our priority is to talk to our employees.”

The spokesperson said all Build Center employees were currently, and in the days ahead, being consulted about whether they would be impacted by changes.

On November 18, Wolseley anounced plans to axe 200 branches and shed 2,000 jobs in a cost-cutting move designed to deal with current trading conditions
