More than 1,000 firefighters tackled at least two dozen blazes, which stretched from heavily forested areas in the western Sierra Nevada to grasslands near Elko 300 miles to the east.
People were evacuated and two major roads closed, while the grounds of a state fire academy were scorched by flames.
Officials said wildfires had struck early this year because the areas affected were a “giant tinderbox”.
