Weyerhaeuser is to close its sawmill at Dryden, Ontario, resulting in the loss of about 330 jobs.

The company said a major restructuring of operations at Dryden was needed due to an oversupply of lumber in the industry, a rising Canadian dollar and the impact of softwood lumber duties on shipments to the US.

October 11 has been earmarked as the date for closing the mill, which will affect about 110 workers and an additional 220 positions in pulp and paper converting operations.

The restructuring, expected to cost Weyerhaeuser C$7m, is intended to help the company remain competitive with other producing regions and to match production to its order levels.
