Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire is gearing up for its ninth giant carving event to be held during the Festival of Wood on August 18-25.

Twelve expert carvers will work through the week on huge tree trunks which will be hauled on to The Downs on August 18. The result will be 12 unique works of art which will be auctioned on August 25. Proceeds from the auction go to Tree Aid, a charity working to reverse environmental degradation in Africa.

The carving event is sponsored by Tilhill and so far the sculptures have raised around £100,000 for Tree Aid.
