West Fraser Mills has completed the C$6m purchase of Skeena Cellulose Incorporated’s (SCI) closed sawmill at Smithers.

The deal also gives West Fraser a planer, kiln, properties and about 110,000m3 of timber licences and associated agreements.

It follows approval of the licence transfer from Canadian forests minister Mike de Jong and consultation with affected First Nations.

West Fraser believes the acquisition will make its Pacific Inland Resources sawmill at Smithers a more stable and viable operation. However, it has no immediate plans to re-open the SCI mill.
