A Welsh woodland conservation charity and a joinery manufacturer have devised a way to construct sliding sash timber windows using small components and glue-lamination technology.
The oak laminate window produced by Coed Cymru and James Ratford Bridge has been tested by TRADA and satisifies the British Standard. It is now hoped the product, which houses 24mm double-glazed units and modern seals, can be produced commercially by James Ratford Bridge.
Coed Cymru chairman Dave Brown said: “The window design specifically favours small timber sections from small trees, which is exactly the type of material that Coed Cymru produces from woodland restoration projects throughout Wales.”
The charity is constantly working to build new markets for products using small section timber. It will be canvassing architects, designers, local authorities, housing associations and national parks to assess the laminate window and evaluate its design, strength and environmental credentials.
The window project was funded by the Welsh Assembly’s sustainable development fund and timber from sustainably managed woodlands was sourced from Pembrokeshire Timber.
