Plans to increase demand for timber are featured in the Welsh Assembly government’s newly-published Woodlands for Wales action plan.

The government believes an increased demand for timber will sustain and expand Wales’ forest products industry and its contribution to the economy.

The plan also highlights the use of wood as fuel and timber as a replacement for more energy-intensive materials like steel and concrete.

The action plan sets out what needs to happen over the next five years to make progress towards achieving targets in the Woodlands for Wales strategy – the government’s 50-year vision for the country’s trees and woodlands.

Aims include more Welsh-grown timber used in Wales, instead of imported products, and a more integrated and competitive industry. Increasing the use of timber as a key renewable resource is viewed as helping to respond to climate change challenges.
