Smee Timber marketing manager Robert Weighill finished first out of 400 on a 12-mile charity walk – by being the only person to run it.

Mr Weighill, whose mum recently died from cancer, crossed the finishing line first on the Hospice Of The Good Shepherd’s 12-mile early morning fund-raising walk around Chester. He completed the course in 2 hours and 8 minutes after just two weeks of training.

Although the “Sunrise Stroll” was not a race, Mr Weighill decided to run it as part of his training for another, much tougher charity walk tomorrow in the Welsh mountains. The Welsh 3000 challenges walkers to cover 14 peaks, all of which are over 3000ft above sea level, a total of 30 miles over mountains, within 24 hours. He is again raising money for the hospice.

The Hospice of the Good Shepherd provides care and support to people living across Chester, Ellesmere Port, Deeside and rural Cheshire. Mr Weighill said its day care facilities made a big difference to the quality of his mother’s life in her last months.
