State foresters made the recommendation to reduce the harvest from 600 million board feet to 550 million board feet, an 8% drop, in a submission to the state board of natural resources.

A lower harvest if being sought due to a lawsuit last year brought by environmental groups. As as result of the case the state has agreed to restore streamside forests and to protect the northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet.

The board has now asked the department of natural resources for more information before making a final decision in July.
