Members of the Women’s Timber Corps (WTC) who helped supply the war drive of the first and second world wars can now apply for official recognition of their efforts.
Defra is to supply female veterans of the WTC, along with those from the Women’s Land Army, with badges, which environment secretary Hilary Benn described as “a fitting way to pay tribute to their determination”.
“It is absolutely right that we at last recognise the selfless efforts these women made to support the nation through the days of World War I and II,” said Mr Benn.
“This badge is a fitting way to pay tribute to their determination, courage and spirit in the face of adversity.”
Forestry Commission Scotland recently unveiled a life-size bronze statue in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park in commemoration of the work of the WTC.
