Announcing the appointment, Paul Bailey, EDS managing director and treasurer of the British Woodworking Federation, said Mr Wakeman would help take the business to "the next logical level in our five-year strategic plan".

"He will help us to apply his vast experience to the plans that we have for both our people and our operations. There are significant opportunities to grow our business both organically and through further market consolidation," he said.

Mr Wakeman’s Performance Timber Products Group includes Mumford & Wood, Timber Windows and Dale Windows. He has served an unprecedented three terms as president of the British Woodworking Federation.

Mr Wakeman told TTJ he would help EDS to grow in the commercial performance doorset market and that his new role was complementary to his company Performance Window Group.

EDS, based in Ormskirk, Lancashire, was established in 1990. It has recently invested £300,000 in plant and machinery and has increased production capacity.
