Primed MDF profiles can help builders and merchants work smarter and faster, according to MDF mouldings manufacturer W Howard Ltd.

The company has been carrying out a series of 20-minute tests pitting MDF profiles against sold timber alternatives, to see what time savings can be made when fixing and decorating a room set. The aim is to fit and finish one architrave set and one piece of skirting in the time.

W Howard claims the tests show primed MDF can be fixed, undercoated and prepared for glossing, whereas those working with solid timber “typically manage to do no more than knot and fill”.

“Softwood involves so much prep – sanding, applying knotting solution, applying filler to knots and splits, rubbing down, applying a second coat of knotting solution, rubbing down again, priming with paint – probably twice – then undercoating and glossing,” said Ced Piper, W Howard national sales manager.

“That’s how W Howard…believes any builder can work smarter – not just quicker but at less cost.”

Mr Piper added that merchants are also able to benefit from stocking W Howard’s shrink-wrapped door linings with heads that can be cut on site to any door width.

“Merchants see it is a real benefit to have a much smaller stock holding providing a universal product and offer their customers a single package solution,” he said.
