Voting has opened for the Big Lottery Fund: The People’s £50m contest, where Sherwood Forest has applied for funding to create “a world-class sustainable destination that everyone in Britain can be proud of”.

The Sherwood: The Living Legend project includes plans to construct a 60ft-high timber visitor centre, a 250km-long network of walking, cycling and riding paths and turn 300ha of farmland back into woodland.

This forms part of a major regeneration of the forest, which will safeguard its future and “inspire a whole new generation of young people”.

As part of the competition for Big Lottery Fund money, a special programme will be broadcast on ITV at 11pm on December 5 focusing on the Sherwood: The Living Legend project.

Online votes can be cast via the website, www.thepeoples50million.org.uk, with phone voting open from December 7-10. The winner of the contest will be announced on December 12.
