Vollmer organised seminars from a host of companies including measurement specialists Alicona and Zoller, Haimer (tool-holders, balancing and 3D sensors), Element 6 (PCD material supplier) and brazing specialist Gerling, as well as taking a seminar itself.

Element 6’s market support centre manager Dr Peter Harden told delegates that tools made from its newer WPC102 PCD material, for wood cutting applications, had been tested as giving a tool life up to 160 times longer than a standard tungsten carbide equivalent tool. That equates to 900,000 linear metres of cutting, with resharpening only every 125,000 linear metres.

Keynote speaker Dr Neil Calder gave his thoughts on the future of cutting technology, including the increasing use of water jets and lasers.

The event was the first of its kind for UK customers, who were able to meet 86-year-old Sieglinde Vollmer, daughter of the company’s founder, who is still a significant shareholder in the company.

A detailed report of the event, attended by TTJ news editor Stephen Powney, will follow in the September 1/8 issue of TTJ.
