Visitor numbers at this year’s ASFI at the NEC Birmingham dropped by nearly 6,000 on the previous event two years ago.

Although a final tally is not yet available, a spokesperson said figures for 2004 are thought to be just under 9,000 compared to around 14,800 in 2002.

But the organisers maintain the new-look show was an overwhelming success, with more than 150 exhibitors from 15 countries taking part.

This year exhibitors were offered an all inclusive stand package which included build up, construction and break down as well as furniture, lighting, power and carpet.

ASFI general manager Graham Holdsworth said products from all sectors of the furniture industry were represented, with many new launches and market entrants which attracted serious buyers.

Peter Schubert of Schucon said: “Our enquiry levels were really good – more quality than quantity – but that’s exactly what we wanted.”
