The Vietnam Association of Timber and Forest Products also aims to hit US$8bn by 2020. But it says continued export growth is dependent on investment of about US$1.7bn in the processing sector.
The association also wants the industry to focus on developing interior and exterior wood products during 2006-10 and panel products from 2010-20.
Vietnam’s wood product exports were worth US$1.21bn during the first eight months of 2006, a 56% growth on a year ago.
The ministry of trade believes the industry is on course to achieve US$2.16bn sales in 2006, which would be up 38% on last year.
