The Swedish sawmiller said it was beginning negotiations with unions immediately on the reduction, which it said would lead to the loss of about 40 jobs.

Vida, which operates seven sawmills, blamed the situation on the strong Swedish krona and its belief that consumption of wood products would remain low for a long time.

The news comes as the company progresses with work on a new planer line at its Alvesta sawmill – a move which will double the mill’s planing capacity to about 120,000m3 when it goes operational in early 2013.

Meanwhile, Vida has also launched a new product called Vida Light, a timber/metal pallet collar which it says could replace traditional pallet collars or plywood collars.

The design features significantly less timber raw material and is about 2kg lighter than a standard collar.

Vida said the product had met with "huge" interest in the market.
