Door manufacturer Vicaima has achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain of custody certification for its Portuguese production facilities.

Vicaima, whose sister company Madeiporto also achieved the certification, will begin sales of FSC-mixed certified ash and maple Fire Check 30min doors in the spring.

The certification follows the company’s work with the Tropical Forest Trust (TFT) to tackle complex issues of timber procurement from tropical countries. Smartwood, a programme of the Rainforest Alliance, also provided support.

Arlindo Costa Leite, chief executive officer of the Vicaima group, said: ” We are delighted to be able to demonstrate our commitments to sustainable sourcing through the FSC chain of custody and we look forward to expanding our range of FSC certified door products as the year progresses.”

Andy Tait, of TFT, said: “Vicaima is leading the way in Portugal. This FSC chain of custody is an important element in their push to implement good wood control systems and to get their wood sourcing under strict control.”

Vicaima, which has also received ISO 14001 certification, is currently investigating the construction of a biomass power plant to be fuelled from factory off-cuts.
