The UK hardwood must stress even more strongly that it is providing a valuable, quality product, said president Andy Lodowski at the London Hardwood Club’s 75th anniversary New Year lunch.
Mr Lodowski told 130 members and guests from the UK and abroad that today’s businesses must defend the quality-oriented reputation the hardwood business had earned since the club launched in 1937.
“We are in a difficult market where sometimes everything we do seems a struggle, but we must continue to emphasise that we sell a very special product, sourced from around the world, and that this means selling it for a special price,” he said. “We should always be focused on selling upwards, not downwards.”
He said that there was still a lot of passion in the hardwood business and that there was every reason to be positive for the next 75 years of the London Hardwood Club.
“We can continue to grow as a trade, provided we can encourage others to appreciate the value of the product the same way that we do,” he said.
A raffle at the lunch, held at the Honourable Artillery Company in London, raised over £1,570 for the Cardiac Risk in the Young and Teenage Cancer Trust charities.
