A huge wood pellet plant has been opened in the US as part of an expansion plan by New England Wood Pellet (NEWP), which is also behind the first wood-fuelled gas turbine power generation plant in the country.

The new wood pellet plant in New York State will use up to 200,000 tons of raw wood residue and low-grade timber, and is expected to produce up to 100,000 tons of pellets. The pellets are enough to heat 33,000 homes, the equivalent of 12 million gallons of oil.

NEWP is also expected to bring on line early next year a 1.5MW power station developed by Zilkha Biomass Energy at NEWP’s existing wood pellet site in New Hampshire. The plant will be fuelled by NEWP pellets and the electrical and thermal output delivered to NEWP under a multi-year contract.
