Some 8.8 million acres has been burned, exceeding the 1960 record by 100,000 acres.
Dry conditions are continuing in California, the great Basin and the interior north-west. Big north-western fires are reportedly two-thirds contained. However, cooler and wetter weather is aiding firefighters in the northern Rockies.
