A federal review will be held of Endangered Species Act protections for the northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet in response to lawsuits brought by the US timber industry.
The two birds were listed in the early 1990s, triggering logging cutbacks in national forests. The lawsuits argue that five-year evaluations of the birds as required under the act have not been held and economic impact studies accompanying the critical habitat designations were insufficient.
