The move by the state’s department of natural resources should help timber companies market their wood as environmentally-friendly.
Timberland at Tiger Mountain and other areas in the southern Puget Sound region will be the intitial focus for certification. These areas represent about 7% of state forestland.
The state has already managed to achieve certification of its forests under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative but has been under pressure from environmental group to seek FSC certification.
