The results of independent testing of four American hardwood species have been incorporated in a publication written by Andrew Lawrence and TRADA president Peter Ross, of Arup.

The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) commissioned the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to carry out testing on white oak, red oak, tulipwood and ash. The publication includes the technical results, along with case studies of projects demonstrating structural use of American hardwoods.

A well as detailing the characteristic values of the species tested for structural design, the publication includes the environmental credentials of American hardwoods and provides information on Eurocodes and atandards, national design codes and strength classes and properties for the four species.

AHEC European director David Venables said: “We are now able to offer architects and engineers alike the technical information which they need to consider American hardwoods in structural design.”
