US import stats show that US softwood lumber exports to Spain reached their lowest level last year for 37 years.

According to industry newsletter Random Lengths International, exports to Spain fell to 7.2 million board feet in 2008 – a 63% reverse on 2007.

Spanish business, once a strong sector for US softwood exporters, is down considerably in 2009, with exports in the first four months 64% less than a year ago.

Most other countries exporting softwood to Spain also suffered big declines in business, with Russia topping the list with an 82% reverse.

Austria (+37%) and Madagascar (+12%) were the only countries to register increases.
