Simpson Timber Company is laying off 111 workers as a direct result of the US housing downturn.
The cuts take effect on April 28 at the company’s Tacoma and Shelton sawmills in Washington state. Some 46 jobs at Tacoma and 65 positions at Shelton are affected.
The mills make Douglas fir and hemlock dimension lumber used in home construction.
Simpson, which also operates a door company and pulp and paper mill, has not specified the length of time for the lay-off period.
