The US-based Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports has accepted the World Trade Organisation‘s (WTO) latest ruling on the North American softwood lumber dispute.

The organisation said the WTO’s final ruling, which follows an earlier interim decision in August, supports the US view that “subsidised” Canadian softwood exports to America could potentially damage the country’s mills.

However, Canadian international trade minsiter Jim Peterson promised to appeal against the decision.

He said earlier decisions by North American Free Trade Agreement panels which supported Canada’s argument took precedence under both countries’ treaty obligations.
