Uruguay has submitted its national forest certification scheme for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes endorsement.

Worldwide stakeholders of PEFC have been invited to submit feedback and comments on the Uruguayan Forest Certification Scheme before September 26, as part of the independent assessment required for PEFC endorsement.

PEFC International secretary-general Ben Gunneberg said forestry was one of the most important and fastest growing sectors in Uruguay, and the sustainable management of the forest resources was of fundamental importance to ensure the provision of long-term environmental, social and economic benefits.

Once approved, Uruguay will become the third Latin American country to have a PEFC-endorsed national forest certification system.
