UPM has chosen its Caledonian mill in Scotland to test the practical application of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) chain of custody standards.

The test is part of the company’s programme to increase the use of certified fibre at all its mills.

Markku Tynkkynen, executive vice-president of UPM’s resources division, said the FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification obtained recently by the Caledonian paper mill provided an “excellent” opportunity to compare the two certification standards on an unbiased basis.

UPM, which has 12 mills with certified chain of custody, says it strongly supports mutual recognition of forest certification systems which have comparable standards for sustainable forest management.
