The company’s proposals included the possible outsourcing of manual forestry work, the end of such work under the direct employment of UPM, and the possible impact on employees.

The proposals aim to develop forestry work and its profitability, as well as improving the employment of forestry workers throughout the year.

UPM wants to continue to discuss the details of its proposal with the forestry workers. It will also examine the potential of third-party forestry services companies, and their ability to employ UPM’s forestry workers.

“We need professional personnel to take care of manual forestry work in the future even though part of the work can be mechanised,” said Sixten Sunabacka, vice-president, forestry and wood sourcing in Finland. “To develop manual forestry work, improve attractiveness of the work and cost-efficiency, new ways to operate are needed. We want to actively promote this development.”
