Temporary jobs losses are to be made at all UPM’s sawmills and some of its plywood operations.

Plywood processing operations at Lahti will be transferred to other plywood mills, while all 320 staff will be laid off at the Kaukas mill, which makes uncoated and coated WISA plywood for the transport industry, for more than 90 days.

Employee negotiations will also start at all UPM sawmills in Finland during the second quarter. The duration of possible layoffs will be negotiated separately in each production unit.

A total of 900 people are employed at UPM’s sawmills at Lappeenranta (Kaukas), Kajaani, Pietarsaari, Korkeakoski, Heinola and Pori.

UPM said the move was necessary because of ongoing weakness in plywood and sawn timber markets.
