Timber windows have underlined their top environmental credentials by securing the highest A+ rating in the BRE’s newly updated Green Guide to Specification.

British Woodworking Federation chief executive Richard Lambert hailed timber windows’ performance in the guide, which helps designers and specifiers make the best environmental choices when selecting construction materials and components.

Preservative-treated softwood windows had already enjoyed an A rating in the previous edition of the guide, but most now enjoy an A+, while durable hardwood units with either solvent- or water-borne paints have seen their ratings improve from B to A+.

Rival PVCu units have also achieved a marked improvement – from a C previously up to A. The BRE said this was largely due to increasing recycling of PVCu windows at end of life, plus improvements in manufacturing.
