The Timber Trade Federation, the Confederation of Forest Industries, the Wood Panel Industries Federation and the British Woodworking Federation have united in urging the European Parliament and Council to agree on a workable, but strong mechanism to combat illegal logging. The latter two bodies are in the final stages of negotiations regarding EU due diligence legislation.

The trade federations welcome the proposed prohibition of illegal logging, but are calling for clarification of the EU Parliament’s approach and wording.

They have also urged for legislation to be in line with the FLEGT process and for certification schemes to be included and classed as low risk.

They are opposed to extending due diligence down the supply chain and have disagreed with the concept of introducing labelling. They are also opposed toe the inclusion of recycled wood in the due diligence scheme.
