UK sawnwood production grew 2% to 2.9 million m³ in 2009, according to the latest figures released by the Forestry Commission.
The National Statistics on UK Wood Production and Trade also show that 3 million m³ of wood-based panels were manufactured, a 4% rise from 2008.
A total of 8.8 million green tonnes of softwood logs was harvested during 2009, up 4%, while hardwood harvesting rose 24% to 500,000 green tonnes.
Sawmills took 5.2 million m³ of the wood, up 4%, while wood-based panel manufacturers saw their UK raw material intake reduce by 17% to 1 million green tonnes.
Meanwhile, the Forestry Commission’s latest Timber Price indices show softwood sawlog prices were 21.9% higher in the six months to March, compared with a year ago. Standing timber prices were 5.1% hugher.
